Upper Burma, Shan style late 18th/early 19th century.

Seated in lotus position (Padmasana). Bhumisparsa mudra, the gesture of taking the Earth as witness. The fingers of the right hand touch the ground, while the left hand is placed in the lap, palm facing the sky. The legs are crossed, the soles of the feet facing upwards. This representation of the Buddha evokes Sakyamuni's victory over the demon Mara and represents the most important moment in Buddhism, that of Awakening.
