Souvenir of the 19th century Grand Tour - Lot 133
Souvenir of the 19th century Grand Tour Small bronze after the "Narcissus of Pompeii", a Roman sculpture from the Flavian period found in Pompeii and preserved in the National Archaeology Museum in Naples, depicting the god Dyonisos naked, with a goatskin over his shoulder and his head crowned with a vine. Height: 12.5 cm. Right arm and base missing. Notes The original, found in Pompeii in 1862 and now in the Museo archeologico nazionale in Naples, was thought to be a representation of Narcissus, with his head bowed, admiring his reflection in the water, hence the statue's nickname. The antique met with considerable success, leading to the creation of numerous bronze statuettes, notably in Naples. Travelers on the Grand Tour acquired the model when they visited Pompeii and Naples, helping to spread its popularity.
