Small jar in green blown glass, slightly bubbled, the circul - Lot 1
Small jar in green blown glass, slightly bubbled, the circular body in melon ribs, the flared tubular neck, framed by two applied handles. Roman art, 1st - 3rd century A.D. Good condition. Height: 8 cm. Provenance: former Paris private collection. Notes : Often found in sepulchres, where they are placed alongside the remains of the deceased, Roman glassware had, however, a typically domestic use in the first instance. Ancient glassmakers began by adopting shapes from ceramics (urns, aryballes) or, in this case, from bronzes (ribbed bowls), then, with increasing mastery of the vitreous material, they developed their own shapes, resulting in a large and highly diversified production. A slightly larger example of a similar shape is kept at the Metropolitan Museum under inventory number 81.10.14.
