PAPUA - New Guinea - Lot 282
PAPUA - New Guinea
A votive shield made of carved wood and pigments, decorated with two facing anthropomorphic figures.
Early 20th century.
63 x 20 cm.
Slight damage to the upper portion.
Provenance: Private collection in Paris.
Notes: Votive boards from the Gulf of Papua, called gope by the Urama and Wapo peoples, were sacred objects that embodied ancestral lineages and clans and temporarily housed the spirit beings depicted on them (Welsh, Webb, and Harara, *Coaxing the Spirits to Dance: Art and Society in the Papuan Gulf of New Guinea*, 2006, p. 42).
