Benjamin DUVIVIER (1730-1819) LOUIS DE FRANCE. DAUPHIN Circular bronze medal, finely chased and gilded, depicting the right profile of Dauphin Louis de France, the eldest son of Louis XV and Marie Leszczynska. Died before his father, he never acceded to the throne, but fathered five sons, shown here, three of whom went on to become King of France. Inscribed on the obverse "BORN IN 1729. MORT EN 1765. and signed B. DUVIVIER S.; around the rim inscribed LOUIS DE FRANCE. DAUPHIN./ I D. D. BOURGOGNE. II D. D. AQUITAINE. III D. D. BERRY. IIII CTE. D. PROVENCE. V CTE D'ARTOIS". And engraved on the reverse "N.°1 - POUR - LE ROY" and a sun. This inscription suggests that this was the first copy made by Pierre-Simon-Benjamin Duvivier, who had been the King's engraver and medallist since 1765, for royal approval. Diameter: 13.5 cm.
